Description

After 18 years working as a House Guide at Newstead Abbey, I decided that it was time to record what I had learnt over that time. The experience has left me with various hang ups about the Abbey, so there will be a few myths busted, and it will not only be about Lord Byron, even though he was probably the most famous occupant.

There is more than 850 years of history associated with the building and some of its owners have been just as bad, mad and dangerous to know as the poet. The book is not a serious historical work. Although it goes through actual events that have taken place, I have taken some liberties and tried to get inside the minds of the various characters.

In doing so, I have probably attributed motives and attitudes to them that they would dispute. However, since they are long dead, hard luck! I have learned that visitors to the Abbey like to hear stories about the place and not just dry facts. The book is therefore my take on Newstead’s history, so apologies to the purists, but it is my intention to take you on my personal interpretation  of the history of Newstead Abbey complete with its cast of ‘Shades of Heroes’.
